Buying a VPS for the first time and overwhelmed by all the specs? Don’t panic — follow these 5 steps and your thinking will be clear.
Step 1: Define Your Use Case First
Proxy / circumvention? Web hosting? Running scripts? Streaming Netflix? Your use case determines everything that follows. See choosing by use case for details.
Step 2: Choose a Region and Network Route
Match your ISP to the right premium route: China Telecom → CN2 GIA, China Unicom → 9929, China Mobile → CMI (see China carrier return routes for how these work). For streaming, also check native IP and streaming unlock support.
Step 3: Decide on Specs
For lightweight use or proxy, 1 vCPU / 1 GB RAM is enough. For web hosting, pay attention to disk performance (NVMe) and RAM. Don’t pay for extra cores you won’t use (see CPU benchmarks).
Step 4: Pick a Trustworthy Provider

Step 5: Choose a Billing Cycle
For a new machine, start with a monthly plan to try it out, then commit to annual if you’re satisfied.
A Word of Caution
Don’t lock in an annual plan on your first VPS to save money — start with a small monthly commitment, test the route and stability (see how to test a new VPS), and cancel within the refund window if it doesn’t meet your needs.
