- CPU steal time:
Overselling is the norm with low-cost VPS — providers sell more capacity than physically exists, betting that most users won’t hit full load. Light overselling means cheap and usable; heavy overselling means sluggish and unreliable. Here’s how to check how bad yours is.
What Gets Oversold
CPU, RAM, disk I/O, and bandwidth can all be oversold (also called “over-provisioned”). See the Jargon Glossary entry for “overselling.”
How to Check
- CPU steal time: the
stvalue intop/vmstat— if it’s elevated, your CPU cycles are being stolen by neighboring VMs. A clear sign of heavy overselling. - Benchmark variance: run CPU benchmarks multiple times — wild swings mean heavy neighbor interference.
- Disk slowdown: Disk I/O that drops noticeably during peak hours.
- Evening vs. daytime comparison: smooth during the day, choppy between 8–11 PM — a classic sign of overselling combined with network congestion.
What to Do
During the refund window, test at multiple times of day — especially during evening peak hours. Favor providers with a good reputation for not overselling aggressively. If the price looks too good to be true, overselling is probably severe.
