  • KVM / OVZ =

Browsing Hostloc, NodeSeek, or Telegram groups and seeing “small chicken,” “hop on,” “A/B side” everywhere? This article explains all the common VPS community slang in one go — essential reading for newcomers.

🐔 Nicknames

  • Small chicken (小鸡) = a VPS. The community’s affectionate nickname for a virtual private server.
  • Mother hen / big mother hen (母鸡) = the physical host server that runs VPS instances. Heavy overselling on the host makes the VPS sluggish.
  • Chicken farm (鸡场) = a VPS provider or platform.
  • Large-storage VPS (大盘鸡) = a VPS with a large disk and beefy specs (storage-oriented, with hundreds of GB to several TB of storage).
  • Exit node / relay node (落地鸡 / 中转鸡) = a node used as the “exit” endpoint or as a relay/middleman.
  • Dufu (杜甫) = a pun on “dedicated server” (独服, dú fú) that sounds like the poet Du Fu.
  • Chicken king (鸡王) = a universally acclaimed star plan known for exceptional value.

💰 Buying / Promotions

  • Hop on / launch (上车 / 发车) = buying in / placing an order. When a popular plan goes on sale it “launches” (发车); buying one means you “hopped on” (上车).
  • Ticket / slot (车票 / 名额) = a limited promo slot.
  • Black Friday (黑五) = Black Friday (late November), the biggest annual sale season — VPS at their cheapest.
  • Restock (补货) = inventory of a sold-out plan is replenished (track it in real time at the stock monitor).
  • Overselling (超售 / 超开) = a provider sells more resources than physically exist, gambling that customers won’t all max out simultaneously (see how to detect overselling).
  • A/B side (AB面) = when the “A side” a provider shows during testing differs from the “B side” delivered over the long term — i.e., bait-and-switch quality.
  • Run away (跑路) = a provider takes customers’ money then shuts down and disappears. Common risk with cheap, small providers — don’t prepay multiple years.
  • Freebie hunting / wool pulling (撸 / 薅羊毛) = grabbing free or ultra-cheap perks (e.g., Oracle Cloud’s always-free instances).
  • Hold the number / price lock (保号 / 锁价) = renewing at the lowest tier to keep your account and lock in the old user pricing.
  • Great benefactor (大善人) = a generous provider whose specs and resources far exceed what you’d expect for the price.
  • Oracle (甲骨文) = Oracle Cloud, famous for its “always free” instance tier — a favorite for freebie hunters.

🔧 Testing / Tinkering

  • Hybrid beast / fusion monster (融合怪) = a popular all-in-one benchmark script that tests CPU, disk, network, and streaming unlock in a single run — the standard new-VPS checkup (see how to test a new VPS).
  • DD / reinstall (DD / 重装) = using a dd script to reinstall or change the operating system on a VPS (KVM lets you do this freely; see virtualization types).
  • Benchmark (跑分) = running CPU or disk performance tests.
  • Streaming unlock (解锁) = streaming media unlock — whether the VPS can access Netflix, etc.
  • Netflix (奈飞 / 奶飞) = Netflix.
  • Three carriers (三网) = China Telecom / Unicom / Mobile (see three-carrier return routes).
  • Evening peak (晚高峰) = roughly 20:00–23:00, when network congestion is highest and ordinary routes are most likely to slow down or drop packets.

🛡️ Attacks / Defense / Billing

  • DDoS = Distributed Denial of Service attack — flooding a server with traffic to take it offline.
  • CC attack = application-layer attack targeting websites (bombarding the server with requests to exhaust resources).
  • DDoS-protected (高防) = a machine or IP with high-capacity DDoS mitigation — can handle large volumetric attacks (and costs more).
  • 95th percentile billing (95计费) = a commercial billing method based on the 95th-percentile bandwidth peak (dropping the top 5% of peak periods).
  • Guaranteed / burst bandwidth (保底 / 峰值带宽) = the minimum guaranteed bandwidth / the maximum burst bandwidth allowed.
  • Anycast = the same IP is announced from multiple global locations; users connect to the nearest node (common in CDN and DDoS-protected setups).

🌐 Network Lines / IP Types (click through for details)

  • CN2 / GIA / GT / 9929 / CMI = premium carrier network lines (see CN2 GIA, 9929, CMI).
  • Native / announced / residential IP = IP types that affect streaming unlock and risk controls (see native IP).
  • Home broadband / residential broadband (家宽 / 住宅宽带) = consumer ISP connections, corresponding to residential IPs (least likely to be flagged by risk systems).
  • IDC / data center = a commercial data center; data-center IPs are easily identified as “server” IPs.
  • NAT VPS (NAT 小鸡) = a low-cost VPS that shares a public IP and is assigned only a port range (see NAT VPS).
  • KVM / OVZ = two virtualization types (see virtualization comparison).

🏠 Communities / Slang Origins

  • LET / LEB = LowEndTalk / LowEndBox — popular English-language budget VPS communities.
  • Hostloc / NodeSeek = the major Chinese VPS forums, also the birthplace of most of this slang.
