Many people setting up a blog either overbuy and waste money, or underbuy and end up with a sluggish site. Here’s a “just enough, nothing wasted” checklist for picking the right machine.
Baseline Specs: 1 Core / 1 GB RAM Is Enough to Run WordPress
- Personal blog / small site (a few hundred daily visitors): 1 core, 1 GB RAM, 20 GB disk is plenty to run WordPress + a database.
- Growing traffic / lots of plugins: Step up to 2 cores / 2 GB RAM and add caching (Redis or a page cache plugin) — that beats throwing hardware at the problem.
- Storage: Pick NVMe / SSD. Blogs are barely disk-intensive; 20–40 GB is more than enough.
Network Line: Optimize for Your Audience
- Readers mainly in China: Choose a VPS with a strong return route for China’s three carriers (CN2 GIA / CMIN2 / 9929). Pages load fast with no lag.
- Overseas readers / don’t care about China speed: A standard line works fine and saves money.
Not sure whether a line is legit? Run a real latency test with the Ping Speed Test, or check our three-carrier benchmark data.
4 Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Buying high-spec hardware without enabling caching: A slow blog is almost always a caching problem, not an underpowered server. Set up caching before upgrading specs.
- Skipping backups: Cheap VPS providers can disappear without warning. Always back up your blog regularly (database + files).
- Miscalculating bandwidth: Blog traffic is light, but lots of images or downloadable files can burn through your monthly quota fast — do the math first.
- Locking into long annual plans with small providers: Don’t prepay too far ahead with unknown providers. Start month-to-month or quarterly to gauge stability.
Check Stock First — Don’t Pay Full Price
1 GB / 2 GB VPS units suited for hosting often go on sale during restocks. Watch the real-time stock monitor — waiting for a restock can cut the price in half versus buying at list price.
