“1Gbps bandwidth” and “1TB traffic” are two completely different things. Don’t mix them up when buying a VPS.
One-Line Explanation
- Bandwidth: The size of the pipe — determines how fast you can go at any given moment (unit: Mbps / Gbps, e.g. “1Gbps port”).
- Traffic (data transfer): Your monthly total allowance (unit: GB / TB, e.g. “1TB/month”). Once you exceed it, you may be throttled or suspended.
An Analogy
Bandwidth = the diameter of the water pipe (how much water can flow at once). Traffic = your monthly water quota (how much water you’re allowed to use in total). You need to consider both:
- High bandwidth + low traffic: Can go very fast, but not for long (good for occasional high-speed bursts with modest total usage).
- Low bandwidth + high / unlimited traffic: Can’t go fast, but can run indefinitely (good for long-running background services or low-speed workloads).
A Note
“Unlimited traffic” from a provider usually comes with a smaller shared bandwidth port; “high bandwidth” plans tend to have a traffic cap. Match the plan to your use case (high-speed downloads? always-on background service?).
