The two biggest mistakes when buying a VPS: overpaying, and buying the wrong thing and only realizing it after it arrives. These 5 steps help you get it right the first time.
Step 1: Decide What You’re Actually Going to Use It For
Your use case drives everything — don’t jump straight to price comparisons:
- Website / Blog (WordPress, personal homepage): 1 vCPU + 1 GB RAM is enough to start; prioritize stability and routing.
- Small app / API / bot: focus on CPU and RAM, check for rate limiting.
- Learning / tinkering (Docker, Linux): cheap and disposable is fine — reinstall freely.
- Self-hosted services (private cloud storage, monitoring, Git): pay attention to disk size and bandwidth.
Step 2: Understand 4 Core Specs
- CPU / RAM: determines how much you can run. 1 GB is fine for a basic site; databases need 2 GB+.
- Disk: NVMe > SSD > HDD; 20–40 GB is plenty for most sites.
- Bandwidth: hitting the monthly cap usually triggers throttling or suspension — check whether it’s counted one-way or both ways.
- Network route: if you need good access from China, this is the most important factor (see our network routing explainer).
Step 3: Don’t Just Look at the Monthly Price — Calculate the Real Annual Cost
Many cheap plans are only cheap on annual billing; monthly billing can cost twice as much. Some also spike at renewal. Always convert to annual cost before comparing. If you’re switching or canceling mid-cycle, use the remaining value calculator to figure out what you can get back — don’t leave money on the table.
Step 4: Avoid These 3 Beginner Traps
- Heavy overselling from small providers: listed as 1 vCPU, but in practice it crawls like a slideshow.
- Bandwidth traps: 200 GB sounds like a lot until you hit it and your VPS goes offline instantly.
- Can’t grab stock: popular cheap plans sell out fast. Waiting blindly gets you nowhere — watch the stock monitor instead.
Step 5: Use Live Stock Monitoring to Snag Deals — Don’t Pay Full Price
Good cheap plans go out of stock often, but restocks happen within minutes. Check our real-time stock monitor — 28 providers, 1,000+ plans, probed every 2 hours. Restocks are immediately visible so you don’t have to keep refreshing each provider’s site.
